Here we are, at the end of January…

And there are all these videos to watch!!

The Chickening

This is one of the strangest things I’ve seen in a while. It made a splash at Sundance and it’s been sent to me numerous times this week. The song is pretty catchy too.

Throttle for v8 paper engine

That is not a typo. YouTuber Aliaksei Zholner has been hand-crafting a motor engine out of paper and posted several videos of his progress. It’s powered by the air in a balloon. This is amazing. (Odd, yes, but amazing.)

The Chemical Brothers – Wide Open ft. Beck

A really intricately coreographed video for one of the tracks off the new Chemical Brothers album. The comments confirm it creeps a few people out. This is a bizarre, fascinating video.

World’s Fastest Rubik’s Cube Solving Robot

The upshot: 1 second. I give up. (My fastest time: 1 minute 12 seconds, decades ago.)

Bonus Video!

Pixar-Style Ratatouille

“An elegant vegetarian dish inspired by one of our favorite movies.”

And yes, they included the recipe. I like!

Happy, Happy Friday everybody!

January 22nd, 2016

Hello Friday!

Great to have you back.

And now, some videos!

Choir! Choir! Choir! of 500+ Sings David Bowie’s Space Oddity at the AGO

“A collective shock was felt when David Bowie passed this past Sunday, a couple days after his 69th birthday. We immediately teamed up with the Art Gallery of Ontario to pay tribute by singing our original arrangement of Space Oddity with 500+ singers.”

I was sent this video by many subscribers and wasn’t expecting the emotional impact it provides. Definitely worth a watch. RIP, Bowie.

NYC Subway Timelapse – The Queens-bound 7 Line

A nicely-shot (4K!) short video timelapse of the 7 line in NYC. It’s kind of soothing.

Le Petit Chef – Bouillabaisse

“The world’s smallest chef cooks a typical fish dish, ‘Bouillabaisse’…”

(With the assistance of some pretty great projection mapping.)

Here’s another. These are great.

“Using rescue flares to lighten the darkness, the riders appear as sparks to reveal an ephemeral world of shadows.”

Creative! It looks really lovely.

Bonus Video!

Violin Imitating a Car Alarm

YouTuber Britaney Gaither presents the unmistakeable tones of a typical car alarm.

It’s an interesting talent…

See you next week!

Friday has arrived, and you know what that means…

… Pancakes!!

Oh. (No?) Okay: Videos!

a.k.a.: A vfx breakdown from Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Wow. Wow! (I mean: you can imagine, right?)

The Toy Piano Virtuoso

“Margaret Leng Tan is the first woman to graduate with a doctorate from Juilliard and the first toy piano virtuoso. She has played her toy pianos around the world, including concerts at Carnegie Hall and New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art.”

Wow. This is a thing!

‘Dumb & Dumber’ as an Oscar-Worthy Drama

[self explanatory]

Well done.

Shooting a Video with a 136 Years Old Lens

“For this episode we will teste a 1880 large format camera lens, one of the first lens with internal iris”

I love this idea.

Bonus Video!

Celebrity Nano-Impressions with Ross Marquand

Harrison Ford almost sneezing, for example. He’s great.

Have a lovely Friday!

January 8th, 2016

It is Friday! Huzzah.

And now it’s time for some videos. Let’s go!

Of Oz The Wizard

“The Wizard of Oz”, in purely alphabetical order. (Including the titles and credits.)

This has been making the rounds all week. It’s an astonishing video.

I couldn’t get past the B’s but holy crap what an insane amount of processing (and hard work) went into making this.

I fully expect lawyers to take this down soon so… enjoy (?) while you can.

F The Internet

A ridiculous, funny little fake ad / clip. (With an odd mid-70s vibe.)

Suggested by Alison L.

Systems at Work

“Each day the United States Postal Service processes hundreds of millions of pieces of mail and delivers to over 150 million addresses. At the center of this bustling postal network are more than a hundred Processing and Distribution Centers spread across the United States.”

A pretty good look inside the complicated processes at work in getting your package from a to b.

Adult beginner violinist – 2 years progress video

“This video is a collection of all the videos I recorded since I first started to play the violin. From week 1 until today. ”

I think (especially since it’s the new year) this is an excellent way we could all measure progress in whatever we tackle. Great stuff.

Bonus Video!

Worst Wifi Password Ever

Repetitive but I like it. 🙂 (And that’s actually a great idea for a password!)

Have a wonderful weekend everybody!

January 1st, 2016

And a whole new year! Happy New Year!

Video time…

2015: The World Around Us

A very well edited recap of 2015. Suggested by James H.

John Kimble Books a Hotel Room

Using nothing but a phone, a lot of patience, and a soundboard of samples from Arnold Schwarzenegger movies, this guy books a hotel room in Florida. Well done!

Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back – Modern Trailer

Created by YouTuber “Tom F”, this is a pretty great upgrade of the original 1980 trailer.

From Timber To Tide

“This film documents Ben Harris’ love of wood work and boat building, how he acquired his skills, and how incredible it is to be able to take something that you’ve built with your own hands out onto the water and sail it across the sea.”

Bonus Video!

The Bad Plus “Flim” @ New Morning (Paris)

This alt-jazz / what-have-you group perform this complicated Aphex Twin track live in Paris. I’m blown away because most of AP’s percussion is programmed in such a way that a human was never meant to perform it.

See you next week everybody.
